"Our factories are pumping
so much toxic material and chemical waste into the air that there are now
ten pounds up there for every human being in this country. Think of that!
Industries in the state of Kansas, just to name only one of the fifty culprit
states, are now releasing more than seventy thousand pounds of phosgene
into the air each year. That terrible gas killed thousands when it was
used as nerve gas during World War I! We now have over four million automobiles
in the world and they are spewing more than five hundred million tons of
carbon into the air we breathe each year. To compound the tragedy, it has
now been estimated that unless drastic measures are taken soon, those emission
figures will double within the next twenty years. Carbon dioxide and methane
from the fuels we burn have been collecting above in a thick shell
that is preventing our planet's heat from dissipating off into space, and
so our temperatures down here are slowly but steadily beginning to rise.
